Welcome to the Humber Reseach Intensive 2024

Values in Research

As a researcher, you have the potential to foster values-based culture of practice that has remarkable potential, in Humber and far beyond.

How can this potential be fully unleashed, developed and most importantly, sustained?

It starts with YOU.

What Are Values Anyway?

(If you have not yet taken the Kairios Values Perspectives survey online, we suggest you do that before you download the PDF.)

Two Core Values for Guiding Values Work in Groups

SAFETY is a core value in all values work. It means that personal values data generated when you take a survey is NEVER shared with anyone (except a certified Values Perspectives coach and only with your permission). It means that group values data is always anonymized. It means we all respect the values others choose to tell us about. It means we never compel anyone to share anything about their values they are not comfortable in doing so. It means that personal values stories that are shared are not repeated outside the context in which they have been shared without permisison.

What does the value of Safety when sharing values mean to you?

DIALOGUE is a core value in values practice. Why? Simple: because everyone defines the values they hold in their own way. The only way we can understand the values of others—and to arrive at genuinely shared values—is to find out what a value means to another person. How? We ask. And we listen. If asked, we share—always remembering the core value of Safety.

What does Dialogue mean to you?

ORI, Values and YOU

Conducted IN PERSON Wednesday, November 29, 2023

Questions we will worked with: What values do you bring to ORI and how to they translate into your unique role in ORI? How do your values relate to the developing set of ORI’s guiding values? What does ORI’s mission mean to you, in your job? What do ORI’s agreed-upon, shared values mean in practice? What next?

The ongoing question is: “What’s most important?”

We look forward to seeing you on the 29th.

Cracking the Conflict Conundrum: The Subtle Art and Skill of Feedback

Giving feedback is a true conundrum. What do I say? When do I say it? What is going on anyway? Time to engage the VOI Overdrive. —the Voice of Objective Intelligence—and get a grip on who, when, how, what and why whatever it is matters, and how much; and come up with a cogent strategy for facing the situation head on. Without death or destruction—to the party you are addressing, or YOU as the feedback giver. The art of sussing a situation, going in with the right message and being ready to foster the best outcome, whatever happens.

Something Special on Offer:

Salons: You Name It, We’ll Be There

What questions do you have about putting values into practice? What skills would you like to hone at work? What works for you: what successful practices do you have to offer to peers? These and other questions can be explored in topic-based Salons. Have a burning question? Cheryl and Kenton offer to host a dialogue session on burning topics of interest. Just gather at least three ORI team members, make the request, and we’ll make it so.

UPCOMING The Values Alignment Process Continues: Defining and Refining ORI’s Values in Practice and Telling the Stories

IN PERSON, date and time TBA

ORI’s Values Alignment is still in its foundational stage. Values need to be carefully examined and defined so that every team member, in every working position, understands—and communicates—what the values mean in their job; and what they mean to each person as a contributing team member, who fulfills individual responsibilities and acts to supoort fellow team members in meeting ORI’s goals. Agreement on shared values does not mean acquiescence; it does not mean silent, passive acceptance. It means every team member has a voice, has a perspective that matters; and when a set of working values is fully agreed, everyone can live with them, productively and with satisfaction. Once this is accomplished,ORI has a true set of working values and the next stage in the process is for each team member to live up to the values, in word and action.

Peer Pods 2024 TBA

As those of you know who have participated in a Peer Pod, this is a small, diverse sub-group of ORI team members. A Peer Pod is a place to develop trusted relationships with team members in order to explore ideas and observations, share learnings, ask questions, and give and receive feedback. Peer Pods are among the most effective means to internalize learnings, practice skills, receive meaningful peer coaching, and develop competencies that are useful in your job and in your life.
